In-Person Conference
About
The Vermont Educators of Color Association, the Education Justice Coalition of Vermont, and other ally groups are planning our first annual Education for Social Justice conference. As a Coalition we’ve been connecting in groups and pockets throughout the state for the last five years and now is the moment to bring people together.
The conference is on April 1, 2023 in South Royalton, VT at White River Valley High School (223 S Windsor St, South Royalton, VT 05068). If you’re an educator, parent, or someone connected to young people, we encourage you to bring groups of youth. You can register up to five guests under your name.
The conference will be free to attend and open to educators, students, parents/caregivers and community organizers who are working towards justice in our schools.
It is in the spirit of other grassroots conferences such as NYCORE Conference in New York or the T4SJ Conference in San Francisco.
Theme
Our theme for our first annual conference is “Reimagining Schools, Connecting Communities”. Our goal is to come together to reimagine schools as places of belonging that can further justice both inside and outside of the building. Connecting communities has multiple meanings: connecting schools with communities, connecting people throughout the state doing education justice work, and making space for our identities and uniting across them. We understand that justice in schools depends on increasing social justice in our communities.
Conference Objectives
Build relationships to sustain ourselves and sustain our education justice movement in Vermont
Cultivate joy and give us energy to do this work
Share skills, lessons, and learnings to transform our schools
Lift up and attend to issues that impact our students and our community
What To Expect
Music, art, and fun
Adults and students in spaces together and spaces apart
Affinity spaces for BIPOC students, educators, and community members
Spacious timing
Accessibility of space, language, food, childcare, and transportation
Connection between the event and the local community
Youth and adult led workshops
Make this Conference Possible!
We are working to raise $15,000 for the Education Justice Coalition. As always, we will prioritize accessibility of space, language, food, childcare, and transportation. We welcome your support in funding all of the elements that go into creating true inclusivity and accessibility for this conference. Thank you for any donation you’re able to offer. If you donate $75 or more, we’ll send you a gift – a beautiful pottery mug with our “Change is Possible” block print. What better way to show your colleagues, friends, and family that you’re part of a statewide team working towards education justice!
Donations do not have to be monetary. We need supplies as well. We’re in need of:
Blank light-colored shirts of all sizes (used and thrift store finds are great) for screen printing
Snacks
A sound system with a microphone to borrow the day of
compostable plates, bowls, utensils
If you can donate any of these items, please fill out the Supply Donation Form
