Date: Friday, October 27th 10:00-2:15
Where: Upper Valley Educators Institute 194 Dartmouth College Hwy, Lebanon, NH 03766
Event Description
The Vermont Educators of Color Association is launching their affiliate program with the first annual Educators of Color Symposium. This half day learning opportunity will be focused on giving school admin and education leaders the perspective and skills to better support and sustain educators of color. Workshops will be led by Susan Yao a former independent school leader with experience supporting educators of color and Esther Charlestin the former Dean of Culture and Climate and Middlebury Union High School.
In “Stop Trying to Recruit Black Teachers Until You Can Retain the Ones You Have”, Bettina Love describes the critical step of improving school infrastructure to support Black teachers before recruiting them. “With each Black teacher who enters and then exits the teaching profession, Black children who might have grown up to become educators are learning that teaching is not a welcoming profession for them. We are losing future Black educators in the imaginations of young minds while teaching their non-Black peers that Black people don’t belong at the front of a classroom.”
The Educators of Color Association has seen many Vermont educators of color leave the profession due to structures that weren’t supportive for them. Commit to sustaining educators of color by taking the time to hear directly from educators of color, ask questions, and develop action steps to support all students, especially students of color in Vermont schools.
