This fall, the Vermont Agency of Education is re-writing their official Hazing, Harassment, and Bullying Policy, a key policy that is meant to support youth who experience harm. They have not provided student and family centered opportunities to give feedback. This is the wrong way to go about revising this policy. Join the Education Justice Coalition and Outright Vermont on Thursday, Oct. 16th, 5:00-6:30pm on Zoom to speak up and organize.
We are taking this need into our own hands. We know the current policy is not meeting our needs as Northfield residents recently made clear in responding to harm in schools.
If you have been impacted by harm in your schools, this meeting is meant for you. Come develop a clear set of recommendations for this new policy based on student and family needs– and the lived expertise of surviving and thriving in spite of harm.
We welcome students, families, and community members that have been impacted by bullying and harassment in schools. This includes folks that have directly supported young people with this issue.
We will be building on existing stories from our Narratives for Change Project to develop recommendations. We will be presenting some community data to paint a clearer picture of what is happening in our schools. We will invite you to reflect on what you need to improve outcomes for yourself, your youth, and your community.
Check out our Hazing, Harassment, and Bullying Toolkit. The toolkit is meant to equip students with the knowledge and skill set to intervene as harm is occurring, and take steps to prevent future harm. It was created by youth and for youth. It includes information about bystander intervention, know your rights, and advocacy.
