Free to Be Youth Day

Join the VT Educator of Color Association for our first Free to Be Youth Day! The Free to Be Youth Day is a BIPOC-centered space providing opportunities for connection, healing and joy.

Register soon! We have limited space. We will close the application when we reach 60 registrants. Registration is for school groups. If you have an interest in attending without a school group, contact Kayla at kayla.edjvt@gmail.com

Who: This a BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color)-centered gathering for middle and high school youth in Vermont. Up to 8 youth and two adults can join from a school.

Where: Windsor County, VT

When: September 30th 9:30am-1:30pm

Why: This event comes out of our successful Educator of Color retreats and Camp Free to Be. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 53% of youth of color “feel valued in community” compared to 59% of all students. In the 2019-2020 school year, Black students in Vermont had a 70% graduation rate, Asian students had a 75% graduation rate, while White students had a 85% graduation rate (NCES) Peer connections are especially important in adolescence for developing a sense of self. We are addressing the lack of belonging marginalized youth might feel at school by providing a safe space for them to connect and build relationships.

What: We’ll have food, music, games, crafts, and plenty of opportunities for connection and joy.

Cost: $25 per youth if the school can pay and free for everyone whose school is not able to pay.

Accessibility: The space is wheelchair accessible. We’ll ask for accessibility needs in the registration form and will do our best to meet them.
